Maintenance of Customer-Owned Buried Gas Lines

Natural gas is delivered to our customers through an underground pipeline. Ohio Cumberland owns and maintains the pipeline to the meter set. The customer is responsible for maintaining all gas piping that extends beyond the gas meter to the appliances in the customer’s home or business.

If buried piping is not maintained, it may be subject to the potential hazards of corrosion and leakage. Buried gas piping should be periodically inspected for leaks, periodically inspected for corrosion if the piping is metallic, and repaired if unsafe conditions are discovered.

When excavating near buried gas piping, the piping should be located in advance, and the excavation done by hand. Before digging, contact the Ohio Utilities Protection Service at 1-800-362-2764 or dial 8-1-1 at least two (2) working days in advance.
